Heading down Bathampton Hill, watch for the nondescript left turn that heads south. Walk through two pastures down the narrow public dirt path and open the gate to Smallcombe Vale farm. Cross through the yard and you’ll notice the iron fence that leads to Smallcombe Garden Cemetery.
In autumn the graves are well visible, but wait ’till spring and you’ll find yourself walking through a sea of tall, tan grasses. Better yet, be there at dusk for the golden hour.
If you’re lucky, the rusted blue Volkswagen will be parked out front. This is one of the most beautiful and wild cemeteries you will ever come across.
Bonus: There is a stone building that looks like Hagrid’s hut and a beautifully overgrown and derelict path where you may run into locals on their evening dog walks.
