For one October weekend every year, there is a design and architecture event in New York called “Open House” that offers you the opportunity to visit dozens of buildings and private spaces that are normally closed to the public.
In 2018 I took advantage of this city perk by checking out the New York Marble Cemetery — not to be confused with the NY City Marble Cemetery. You walk onto the grounds under a metal gate, down a small alley, and find that the cemetery expands in the shared backyard of this city block. Most of the burials here, which are all in underground marble vaults happened in the mid-1800s.
There’s not too much to look at since everything is underground, but what a a neat location.
